16GB Heart USB Necklace by back2root 16GB Heart USB Necklace by back2root
After the success of my original USB heart pendant I have created one in ebony.

I hand carved the heart from ebony wood. I bent an old watch back to fit the shape then using recycled cogs and gears created a small unique movement.

I fitted a 16GB USB drive inside which can simply be pulled out when required. It features a blue activity LED framed by a metal ring that shows through the lid of the key when working.

I have also given the wood a glossy finish leaving it more durable but also silky to the touch.

All the watch parts have come from damaged or irreparable wrist watch's that have been hand disassembled and then combined to create a true, miniature work of art.

This item has sold, however for other items you can visit my etsy shop [link]

it is possible to make one in ebony like this but with a 64gb usb drive in it? The ebony happens to be my favorite of the ones you make. If it is possible will you message me on the cost please.

Lovely! Out of curiosity, how much did the finish change the color of the wood? I've never seen unfinished ebony.

Hi there. Ebony is a beautiful wood that's pure black without any finish applied, the only difference is that the timber is matt prior to finishing - Its without a doubt, one of my all time favorite timbers!

I'm completely self taught. I've read a few books and watched some 'how to' videos on wood carving but mostly its experimental. I'm sure a lot of traditional wood workers would deem my methods unusual, but I guess it gets me the results I want.

That's really amazing. Honestly, I would wear some of the stuff you made, like the heart. It would make a great necklace. Keep up the great work!

I love it. Would be a perfect way to store back-ups of family pictures. Then, if something happens to your computer or phone, you'd have this.

I'm sure a lot of people in the wake of Hurricane Sandy are missing damaged property. And something like this you would be carrying with you. How water resistant is it? Like if someone accidentally wore it in the shower...

Although I wouldn't recommend users going swimming with it on, it is water resistant. The outside of the wood is coated in a waterproof finish and the USB is fitted snugly inside. Even it were to be fully submerged briefly in water providing the user dried it thoroughly afterwards it should still work.

A true piece of time, from a wood carving to manipulated watch parts with a functional USB drive, all combine into a original necklace. Very well done.

Thank you. It took a while to get the shape right as ebony wood is a pain to carve but it's worth it :D

You should try plum wood for your next one, It is a hard wood but in comparison it is quite the pleasure to work with.
