Galileo, Robot planetarium projector prototype by back2root
Galileo, Robot planetarium projector prototype
Meet Galileo!

He is a large, wooden creature built around the heart of powerful LED planetarium capable of projecting 60,000 stars at once!

He stands around 26" tall, 25" deep and 36" wide and is made from an Elm tree felled in Lincolnshire, UK around 7-8 years ago. He is a fully posable character, with around 30 working joints and is made up of well over 200 individual parts.

The planetarium is supplied with 2 interchangeable glass slides, (more are available from 3rd party suppliers) one with the star systems highlighted and annotated and one with the stars alone. It supports both clockwise and anti-clockwise star rotation and optional shooting stars! It has an adjustable focus ring attached to the jaws on the front of Galileo's head.

He also goes to sleep after 15, 30 or 60 minutes if you ask him nicely.

Here are the physical specs of Galileo's heart:

• 60,000 stars
• Ultra-bright 3-watt white LED technology
• Projector: 16.7 x 15.9 x 15.1 cm,
• Projection screen: ceiling, wall or other plane white surface
• Projection distance: 150-230cm
• Projection area: circle with 270 cm in diameter
2 Realistic discs of northern hemisphere with and without constellations included.

Galileo is a prototype, and there is only one other in existence. As it stands, I have no plans to make another one in the near future as he is such a complex and involved piece with well over 40 hours of work in each.

Here's a link to my other post, showing him in action (back2root.deviantart.com/art/E…)

Mechanical Memory USB Cufflinks - 8GB, Paduak by back2root
Mechanical Memory USB Cufflinks - 8GB, Paduak
This piece has just gone up on my Etsy shop! (www.etsy.com/uk/listing/469279…

In this particular design I have created two unique cufflinks, both of which feature an 8GB usb drive concealed inside (Totaling 16GB of storage). This not only removes the need to separately carry a usb key to the office, but also enables you to have one for work and one for personal use.

The item has been made by hand from the ground up. I have used a high quality 8GB flash drive in each cufflink, housed in a hand carved Paduak chassis with around 30 individual parts. It features a blue activity LED framed by a silver ring that shows through the lid of the key when working. On the back I have securely attached a sterling silver cufflink finding within a deep, Ebony veneer.

All the watch parts have come from damaged or irreparable pocket & wrist watches (between 10 & 30 years old) that have been hand disassembled and then combined to create a true, miniature work of art.

Aldrin Lamp by back2root
Aldrin Lamp
This prototype lamp, named "Aldrin" in honour of Buzz Aldrin, is made of Rippled Sycamore wood and his helmet consists of a vintage filament lightbulb.
This prototype used copper tubing to give the illusion of floating but I am in the process of creating a more durable version that can be shipped and expected to be on sale within the next couple of months.
